The hard-fought immigration law has come into force in France. After months of tug-of-war over the new regulation, which is intended to better regulate migration but also improve integration, the text was published in the Official Journal after French President Emmanuel Macron signed it.
The new law was a key initiative of the president. In order to obtain the necessary majority for the project, the government made numerous concessions to the conservative and right-wing opposition, which tightened the draft.
Protests took place across the country in protest against this. The concessions also caused discontent within the government camp.
On Thursday, the French Constitutional Council overturned several measures that had been adopted under pressure from conservatives and with the support of the extreme right. These included, among other things, more difficult conditions for social benefits and criteria for family reunification.
