More than eleven billion euros are expected to flow into the EU’s migration and defense policy by the end of 2027. The mountain of unforeseen expenses is getting bigger and bigger.
Following an agreement between heads of state and government, there will be additional money for the EU’s migration and defense policy. A total of 11.1 billion euros extra is planned by the end of 2027, as can be seen from the final declaration of the EU summit.
Together with the EUR 50 billion in aid for Ukraine that has also been approved and other adjustments, previously unforeseen expenditure of EUR 64.6 billion is planned. However, there will only be 21 billion euros in fresh money, as there will also be reallocations and two thirds of the aid for Ukraine is loans.
The long-term EU budget, the so-called Multiannual Financial Framework (MFF), has so far amounted to around 1.1 trillion euros for the period 2021 to 2027. As the Union’s largest net contributor, Germany contributes almost a quarter of the funds. At the same time, the federal government basically emphasizes that Germany benefits from the EU internal market more than any other European economy.
