North Korea has been firing cruise missiles into the air almost regularly in the New Year. South Korea wants to clarify details.
The self-proclaimed nuclear power North Korea has fired several guided missiles for the fourth time since the beginning of the year, according to the South Korean military. The general staff in Seoul said the launch of the cruise missile was recorded in the morning.
They therefore flew towards the sea between the Korean peninsula and China. Further details were initially not known. It was said that further data would be evaluated together with the US military reconnaissance authorities.
The scope of weapons testing is increasing
North Korea said it had recently tested strategic cruise missiles several times to expand the country’s nuclear power. These included newly developed cruise missiles that could be fired from a submarine. The term “strategic” suggests that they are to be equipped with nuclear weapons.
Tensions on the Korean peninsula are currently increasing significantly again. Over the past two years, North Korea has significantly increased the scale of its rocket and missile weapons tests and has also stepped up rhetoric against the United States and South Korea, which Pyongyang sees as enemy states. Washington and Seoul have expanded their military cooperation, including joint exercises.
North Korea is largely isolated internationally because of its nuclear weapons and missile programs. In contrast to ballistic missiles, tests of cruise missiles are not directly affected by the UN ban decisions against the country. However, like ballistic missiles, they can also be equipped with a nuclear warhead. Unlike ballistic missiles, guided missiles have their own permanent propulsion.
