A photo of the CDU member of the Bundestag Philipp Amthor is making the rounds in social networks. It shows him posing with two suspected neo-Nazis. Amthor made a statement on this.
Philipp Amthor poses smiling between two young men for a photo. It would not be problematic in itself if it weren’t for the inscription on the man’s T-shirt on the left in the picture: “Solidarity with Ursula Haverbeck”. The 92-year-old is one of the most famous Holocaust deniers in Germany and has been in prison for several years.
The photo was apparently taken on Sunday on the sidelines of a Stettiner Haff horse festival in Boock, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and was distributed on Twitter by the “Antifascist Left Bochum”. According to their information, the source for this recording is the Instagram account of a neo-Nazi from Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. According to information from, both men with whom Amthor poses are to be assigned to the right-wing extremist scene in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.
“If I had noticed the inscription, I would not have taken the picture”
The young CDU politician made a statement about the photo in social networks: “At such public appearances it happens quite regularly that I am asked for photos by citizens – including dozens of times yesterday afternoon. The two citizens in one photo , which is currently circulating on Twitter, is shown and knew her background and I do not know. Whether and to what extent the photo published on Twitter has been edited for me cannot be determined with certainty. Had I noticed the t-shirt label, I would have of course not taken the photo. “
Amthor also told the newspaper that he had been asked by ten to 15 people for photos they shared and that he had agreed to all inquiries. He also remembers that he took a photo with the two of them. “However, neither of them were and I don’t know either. I also didn’t notice the campaign T-shirt. If I had known that they were right-wing extremists, I would of course not have taken the photo with them.”
Amthor added in his statement that it should be known “that I am fighting defensively in the Bundestag against the opponents of our constitutional state, which is why it is all the more disconcerting sign of a completely unobjective election campaign to want to put myself in such a context.”
Konstantin von Notz, member of the Bundestag for the Greens, jumped at Amthor’s side: “Sure, the photo is unspeakable crap. But: 1. Nobody in politics is safe from taking photos or selfies of him with problematic people. 2. Sure you should always make sure that people don’t have a Holocaust denier (sic) on their t-shirt, but depending on the situation it can happen. 3. You shouldn’t share #Nazi propaganda, even if it suits you politically. “
