For a good three weeks, tens of thousands of people have been taking to the streets all over Germany against the right and the AfD. A survey has now asked how Germans assess the stability of democracy.
A clear majority of citizens in Germany believe that democracy in the Federal Republic is at risk. 61 percent said this in a survey by the opinion research institute INSA for “Bild am Sonntag”. A third of those surveyed, however, do not consider German democracy to be at risk.
For a good three weeks, tens of thousands of people have been taking to the streets all over Germany against the right and the AfD. The trigger was research by the media company Correctiv into a meeting between radical right-wingers and individual politicians from the AfD, CDU and Values Union in Potsdam in November.
The anti-right demonstrations continued at the weekend with tens of thousands of participants. More than half of the survey participants (55 percent) welcome the demonstrations, while 26 percent reject them – 12 percent don’t care about the protests.
For the survey, the institute interviewed 1,002 adult German citizens between February 1st and 2nd.
