A new party alliance wants to take up the fight against corruption in Bulgaria. The alliance also wants to tackle the delayed judicial reform.
In Bulgaria, the new anti-corruption party PP formed a four-party government after three parliamentary elections. The co-chairman of the party «We are continuing the change» PP, Kiril Petkow, handed over a government draft to the head of state Rumen Radew on Saturday.
Immediately beforehand, Petkov had been charged with forming a new government as a candidate for the strongest parliamentary group. The parliament is expected to vote on Monday on the first regular government of the EU country since April.
“Zero tolerance for corruption will be the motto of our coalition,” affirmed Prime Minister-designate Petkow. His party won the new election on November 14 with 25.67 percent of the vote, but is dependent on coalition partners to govern. In addition to the socialists (former communists) with a good 10 percent of the votes, these are now the populist ITN (9.5 percent) of entertainer Slavi Trifonow and the Alliance for Democratic Bulgaria (a good 6 percent).
Petkov said the proposed four-party government would last four years. The priority is the delayed judicial reform and the fight against corruption as well as currently coping with the rising electricity prices and the corona crisis. Petkow wanted to announce the distribution of positions on Saturday.
Representatives of the future government partners had signed a coalition agreement with Petkov’s «We are continuing the change» PP separately on Friday evening. The bourgeois GERB, which is the second largest party with 22.7 percent, has been politically isolated because of corruption practices.
