The number of asylum applications in Germany fell in January compared to the same month last year. With 26,376 initial applications, the number was 9.3 percent lower than in January 2023 (29,072), but 14.6 percent higher than the value in December 2023, when 23,025 people applied for asylum for the first time. This was announced by the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (Bamf) in Nuremberg.
Most applications continue to come from people from Syria, followed by Turks and Afghans. According to Bamf, these three countries account for three fifths of all initial applications.
