Parties: Wagenknecht would also talk to the Union about a coalition

Sahra Wagenknecht is hoping for a strong performance with her new alliance in the state elections in Thuringia, Saxony and Brandenburg. The party founder wants to govern – but with whom?

With a view to the elections in East Germany, Sahra Wagenknecht does not rule out a coalition between her Alliance Sahra Wagenknecht (BSW) party and the Union. “We will decide on coalitions after the elections,” she told the newspapers of the Bayern media group. The BSW is not available to say “business as usual”. “Something has to noticeably improve for the people, only then will we go into government. But of course we would also talk about it with the Union.”

At the beginning of this week, the deputy chairwoman of the Union parliamentary group, Andrea Lindholz, ruled out cooperation between the CDU and CSU and the BSW. “I can’t imagine working with Sahra Wagenknecht’s new party any more than I can imagine working with the Left Party,” said the CSU politician.

In October, Wagenknecht and her supporters split off from the Left Party and founded the BSW. The BSW was recently at six to seven percent in voter surveys nationwide.

With regard to the number of members of the young party, Wagenknecht said: “We are of course taking on more members and are pleased about the great interest.” Over 16,000 people have registered as supporters so far. But you only grow slowly and you want to get to know everyone to become a member. “Unfortunately, young parties do not only attract constructive colleagues,” she added. Around 390 members gathered at the first nationwide party conference at the end of January.
