Elections: Alexander Stubb is ahead in the Finnish presidential election

Two weeks after the first round of voting, it will be decided who will become the future President of Finland. The first partial results are now available.

The conservative former head of government Alexander Stubb is heading for a victory in the runoff election for the presidency in Finland. After the early votes were counted, the 55-year-old was several percentage points ahead of his competitor, the 65-year-old Green politician and former Foreign Minister Pekka Haavisto.

At that time, Stubb received 52.7 percent of the vote, Haavisto 47.3 percent. A preliminary final result should be known during the election evening. Since almost 46 percent of eligible voters residing in Finland cast their votes early, the evaluation of these almost two million ballot papers was already seen as a good reflection of the vote. But nothing had been decided at that point.

In the first round of voting two weeks ago, Stubb and Haavisto received the most votes of the nine candidates. However, no one achieved an absolute majority straight away, which is why the second round of elections was scheduled between the two strongest candidates. The winner will succeed the previous head of state Sauli Niinistö and take over the presidency as planned on March 1st. Niinistö was not allowed to run again after two six-year terms.
