Anyone who has previously wanted to be boosted against corona usually had to wait several months after the second vaccination. Now the Ministry of Health in North Rhine-Westphalia has relaxed the rule considerably.
In North Rhine-Westphalia, citizens will be able to get a booster vaccination against the coronavirus after just four weeks in the vaccination centers of municipalities and districts. The NRW Ministry of Health has regulated this in a decree. The “Siegener Zeitung” had previously reported.
Even people who received the basic immunization less than five months ago should not be turned away, according to the decree – provided that a minimum interval of four weeks has been reached. The shortened vaccination interval is based on the current recommendation of the Standing Vaccination Commission, according to which a booster vaccination for people with severely impaired immune systems and an expected severely reduced immune response can be given as an optimization four weeks after the second vaccine dose.
A booster vaccination before the end of the five months is basically possible, a spokeswoman for the Ministry of Health in Düsseldorf clarified when asked. However, the four-week minimum interval is expressly not a recommendation, but merely a lower limit.
For example, the district of Olpe already announced the possibility of a booster vaccination four weeks after a second vaccination on its homepage on Monday. The district will immediately implement the new state decree, it said there.
The Standing Vaccination Commission has usually recommended an interval of six months. In view of the expected rapid spread of the Omikron variant, however, experts such as the chairman of the German Society for Infectious Diseases, Bernd Salzberger, have recently pushed for a shortening of the interval between the second and third vaccination. A faster booster vaccination could influence the spread of both the delta and the omicron variant, “the experiences from Israel show that very impressively,” Salzberger told the newspapers of the Funke media group.
