The Foreign Office in Berlin criticized Russia after the death of opposition activist Alexei Navalny and is now drawing conclusions: the Russian ambassador has been summoned.
After the death of the imprisoned Kremlin critic Alexei Navalny, the federal government summoned the Russian ambassador. A spokeswoman for the Foreign Office said on Monday in Berlin that “the politically motivated proceedings” against Navalny and other opposition figures and “the inhumane prison conditions” showed “how brutally the Russian justice system acts against dissidents.” It is also “shocking that people in Russia are being arrested while laying flowers” in memory of the slain Navalny and that their own population is being silenced.
“Our respect goes to all the courageous people in Russia who are committed to democracy and freedom despite the harshest repression.” They are also demanding that Navalny’s body be handed over to the family. Both Chancellor Olaf Scholz and Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock had a conversation with Navalny’s widow Julia.
Government spokesman Steffen Hebestreit added that Baerbock had proposed further sanctions against Russia at the EU level. This will be discussed with the other states. Putin lacks any respect for human life. Navalny’s imprisonment was based on hypocritically politically motivated sentences. There must now be an independent investigation into the cause of death.
