Belarus: Court sentenced Tichanovskaya’s husband to 18 years in prison

Blogger Sergei Tichanowski has been sentenced to 18 years in prison in Belarus. He is accused of organizing mass unrest in the 2020 presidential election.

Opposition leader Svetlana Tichanovskaya’s husband has been sentenced to 18 years in prison in Belarus. The well-known blogger Sergei Tichanovsky, who was arrested shortly after the announcement of his candidacy for the presidential election last year, was found guilty on Tuesday in connection with the mass protests against ruler Alexander Lukashenko, according to Belarusian state media. His five co-defendants were sentenced to between 14 and 16 years in prison.

Svetlana Tichanovskaya published an emotional video message shortly before the verdict was announced. “I will continue to defend this man who I love and who has become a leader for millions of Belarusians,” she said on a video posted on a messenger service Telegram.
