Germany and China often do not agree on foreign and security policy. In Beijing, a delegation from Berlin speaks about the international situation. China had the say first.
Chancellor Scholz’s foreign and security advisor has arrived in China for talks about the international situation and German-Chinese relations. “I look forward to our conversation about the situation in Ukraine after the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine,” said Jens Plötner to China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi in Beijing.
The conversation was also an opportunity to talk about the situation in the Middle East and the actions of the Houthi militia against free maritime traffic. According to Plötner, the federal government is also concerned about the situation in North Korea. China plays an important role in this. Germany attaches “great importance” to its relationship with China and wants to further develop economic relations.
Wang said in his opening statement that China and Germany should shoulder international responsibility. The Chinese praised the good progress in relations between the two countries. As an example, he cited the relaxation of the visa requirement for people with a German passport who want to travel to China. “Above all, stable and well-developed German-Chinese relations will bring important benefits to the people of our two countries in view of the current international situation,” said Wang.
Scholz and Wang had already spoken last Sunday during the security conference in Munich. China is considered Russia’s closest ally. The leadership in Beijing has so far provided support in the Ukraine war. It has not yet condemned the attack, nor the terrorist attack by the Islamist Hamas on October 7, which led to the Gaza war with Israel. China has therefore been criticized for a long time.
