Two Years of the Ukraine War: A Chronicle in Pictures

Two years after the start of the Russian war against Ukraine, people in many places in Germany showed solidarity with the attacked country on Saturday. Rallies, memorial services and concerts are planned in dozens of cities. In many cities, mayors and Ukrainians living in Germany also want to take part in the demonstrations. The many victims of the war of aggression, which violated international law, should also be remembered.

Thousands of civilians dead in war in Ukraine

In February 2014, Russia began an annexation of the Ukrainian Black Sea peninsula of Crimea, which violated international law, and on February 24, 2022, a full-scale invasion of the neighboring country. Since then, according to the United Nations, more than 10,000 civilians have been killed, although the actual number is likely to be significantly higher. So around twice as many people were injured. Exact casualties among military personnel are kept secret.

According to estimates by the United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR), around 6.5 million people have fled Ukraine abroad since the start of the war. Another 3.7 million or so were forcibly displaced within the country. According to the Federal Ministry of the Interior, around 1.14 million refugees from Ukraine are currently living in Germany.
