Federal government: Employees in ministries will be sick for longer in 2022 than ever before

In 2022, the 350,000 federal employees were sick for longer than ever before. On average, they accumulated 21.71 days of absence per employee.

In 2022, the 355,200 employees of the federal administration were on sick leave for longer than ever since the data was collected. The number of average sick days rose from 17.2 in 2021 to 21.71, according to the Federal Ministry of the Interior’s 2022 Health Promotion Report. On average, employees were reported sick on 8.65 percent of the total 251 working days in 2022. The “Bild” newspaper first reported on the published paper.

According to the ministry report, the number of days of absence due to illness was last in 2018 at 21.35, almost as high as in 2022. During the Corona years 2020 and 2021 it was significantly lower at 28.02 and 17.20.

Women in the federal administration are sick longer than men

The numbers were particularly high in simple (34.6 days) and medium service (26.96 days). They were lower in senior (18.92 days) and higher service (11.73 days). Civil servants were sick for an average of 21.63 days, while collective bargaining employees were only sick for 15.46. Women were on sick leave longer or more frequently (23.07 days) than men (20.77 days). The number of sick days increased with age for both sexes.

According to the analysis, almost half of the sick days (49 percent) are longer illnesses of four to 30 days. However, the proportion of absences due to short-term illnesses, long-term illnesses (longer than 30 days) and rehabilitation measures has decreased compared to the previous year.

The office of Minister of State for Culture Claudia Roth (Greens) recorded the longest absences of all federal ministries and offices in 2022 with 29.04 days. The Federal Council with 25.62, the Bundestag with 24.39, the Ministry of Defense with 24.23, the Ministry of the Interior with 22.22 and the Ministry of Finance with 22.04 days were also above average. The Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development reported the fewest sick days at 11.01 days.
