The CDU leadership is discussing its new basic program with its members. At the second stop on their tour of Germany, the Christian Democrats will focus, among other things, on the issue of migration.
CDU leader Friedrich Merz has emphasized the commitment to a leading German culture in the Christian Democrats’ planned basic program. He was grateful that the passage “was discussed and decided so amicably,” said the CDU chairman at a party conference in Hanover.
It was the second of a total of six events at which the CDU wants to discuss the draft of its new basic program. The conference in Hanover is the only one in northern Germany. A federal party conference in May will then decide on the new basic program.
Without commonality, society cannot tolerate diversity, said Merz. “You can call it a cultural minimum. But it’s obvious that we need something like that that holds this society together at its core.” In view of globalization and social changes, something that provides stability is essential.
Sebastian Lechner, chairman of the CDU in Lower Saxony, emphasized that balance was important to him when it came to the issue of migration in the basic program. The CDU is clearly in favor of stopping illegal migration. “It is also true that this country would no longer function without immigrants, without people with a migration background,” said Lechner.
In their draft, the Christian Democrats advocate, among other things, a commitment to a dominant German culture and a relocation of asylum procedures. The party conference was accompanied by protests against the CDU’s stance on migration policy. Refugee organizations had called for the rally in front of the venue.
