Trials: Violent perpetrators from Eritrea: deportation despite persecution?

The Stuttgart riots by young men from Eritrea caused a nationwide stir. After the first verdict, the authorities are trying to get one of the guilty people to leave the country as soon as possible.

After his prison sentence for his participation in riots at an Eritrea event in Stuttgart, Baden-Württemberg wants to try to have the man deported to his African homeland.

The 29-year-old was sentenced last Thursday to a prison sentence of three years and nine months by the Stuttgart-Bad Cannstatt district court for particularly serious breach of the peace and dangerous bodily harm. During the violent protests in September, he is said to have thrown a concrete construction fence base and a paving stone weighing more than three kilograms. The verdict is not yet legally binding. The “Bild” newspaper first reported.

Deportations to Eritrea are currently not possible

However, the chances of a quick deportation are rather slim. Eritrea is one of the poorest countries in the world, it is considered one of the most brutal dictatorships and all opposition is banned. The convicted man is a supporter of the dissidents. Therefore, deportations to Eritrea are currently not possible due to political persecution and the human rights situation.

According to its own information on Wednesday, the Baden-Württemberg Ministry of Justice contacted the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees and initiated a revocation procedure. The aim is to review the deportation ban and, if necessary, revoke it.

Last September, up to 200 young opponents of the regime demonstrated with roof battens and poles against the event in the Stuttgart Roman fort because, in their opinion, the participants were close to the dictatorial regime in Africa. They threw stones and bottles at police officers, causing a stir and terror across the country. According to the public prosecutor’s office, 39 police officers were injured, some of them seriously.
