A possible ban on the AfD has been discussed for weeks. Bremen now wants to make an advance at the federal level.
The Bremen government factions are seeking possible ban proceedings against the AfD. The Bremen Senate should advocate for this at the federal level, as the parliamentary groups announced. Only the Federal Constitutional Court can decide on a ban – after an application from the Bundestag, Bundesrat or Federal Government.
The factions of the SPD, Greens and the Left in Bremen now want to make their first attempt. They plan to vote next week in the Bremen parliament on a motion calling on the Bremen Senate to act. The Senate should work to ensure that the Office for the Protection of the Constitution creates a collection of material on the AfD. On this basis, the Senate should then urge the Federal Council to make a quick decision on a ban procedure.
“Prohibition process must be examined quickly”
The Bremen SPD parliamentary group leader Mustafa Güngör emphasized that with this initiative, Bremen is taking on “a pioneering role in the fight against right-wing extremism” nationwide. If the AfD were to assume government responsibility in individual states or at the federal level, there would be a risk of infiltration by enemies of the constitution. A ban procedure must therefore be examined as quickly as possible and, if necessary, initiated.
At the end of January, the Federal Council launched a petition entitled “Check AfD ban!” received, which had been signed by around 800,000 people since mid-August. The same demand has been made in recent weeks at numerous rallies against right-wing extremism and for the protection of democracy. The protests were triggered by revelations by the media company Correctiv about a meeting of radical right-wingers in Potsdam in November, in which AfD politicians and individual members of the CDU and the very conservative Values Union also took part.
