Extremism: Faeser sees a greater willingness to use violence among left-wing radicals

Federal Interior Minister Faeser is alarmed by the arson attack on the power supply at the Tesla factory in Brandenburg and is demanding serious consequences.

After the arson attack on the power supply at the Tesla factory in Brandenburg, Federal Interior Minister Nancy Faeser (SPD) called for tough action against left-wing extremists.

“It appears to have been a suspected left-wing extremist attack; it was a serious arson attack that left many, many thousands, especially households, without electricity,” the minister told the German Press Agency. She also condemns the attack very strongly because it led to the power going out in clinics and doctors’ offices, which could be life-threatening.

“Left-wing radicalism is getting tougher”

Faeser said in a video interview: “To be honest, for us it is a phenomenon that we have already seen in recent years that left-wing radicalism is becoming tougher, more violent and does not shy away from such actions, and tough action must now be taken.” The public prosecutor’s office must take action “and you must also feel severe punishments.”

On Tuesday, the previously unknown perpetrators set fire to a power pole in a field that is also responsible for supplying the Tesla factory. Production in Grünheide near Berlin was then stopped. Tens of thousands of residents in the region were also affected by the power outage. Tesla had to stop production of the cars for the time being. A letter claiming responsibility for the attack is considered authentic by the security authorities and assigned to the left-wing extremist spectrum.

Kritis umbrella law for more precaution

Faeser emphasized that the Federal Ministry of the Interior had warned a long time ago about possible attacks on the energy supply and other elements of the so-called critical infrastructure. That’s why your ministry has set out to introduce a Kritis umbrella law. The draft law, which will be discussed in the cabinet in the next few weeks, should also oblige the operators of critical infrastructure to do more for precautionary measures.
