More women in leadership positions in the highest federal authorities

43 percent of the leadership positions in the highest federal authorities are held by women – a small increase compared to the previous year. But the federal government wants more. A Green Party ministry is leading the way.

More women in leadership: The federal government wants to set a good example. But Federal Family Minister Lisa Paus (Greens) says developments are still progressing too slowly. In June 2023, 43 percent of management positions in the highest federal authorities were held by women – that is an increase of two points compared to the previous year. “The proportion of women in leadership positions is increasing too slowly overall,” said Paus on International Women’s Day in Berlin this Friday. 19 of the 24 highest federal authorities still employ fewer women than men in leadership positions.

“Promoting equality must be the top priority for the entire federal administration so that we can achieve the legal goal of equal participation of women in leadership positions by the end of 2025,” said Paus. Far too often, women did not make it into management because they worked part-time. “We have to start there.”

The Federal Audit Office is at the bottom when it comes to women’s quotas

The Federal Ministry for Family, Senior Citizens, Women and Youth has the highest proportion of women in leadership at 66 percent. The Federal Audit Office brings up the rear among the 24 authorities with a share of 33 percent.

According to the information, the goal of filling management positions on an equal basis by the end of 2025 applies to the entire federal administration. However, the equality index published by Paus only includes around 34,000 employees of the highest federal authorities. The vast majority of federal employees – another 567,000 people – work in subordinate authorities, corporations, institutions and foundations. Here the proportion of women in leadership is 45 percent.
