Weapons delivery: Habeck: Use the time wisely before the Taurus vote

The dispute over the Taurus could become a domestic political test. The Union wants to vote again on a delivery to Ukraine. Vice Chancellor Habeck wants to prevent a showdown.

Vice Chancellor Robert Habeck has advised the traffic light coalition to prevent a showdown in the vote on the Union’s proposal to supply Taurus cruise missiles to Ukraine. It doesn’t give a good picture if the German parliament doesn’t stand together here, said the Green MP on Welt TV.

“We should use the days until the planned vote on Thursday wisely,” appealed Habeck. He hopes that by then there will be momentum to “quickly provide further military support” to Ukraine.

At the same time, the Minister of Economic Affairs is calm about possible deviations from the traffic light factions in the vote on the Union proposal. “In various votes, we always had a few voices that behaved differently. The coalition can tolerate that well,” he said.

The Union wants to submit another proposal for a vote in the Bundestag on Thursday to supply Ukraine with the Taurus system. Chancellor Olaf Scholz rejects the delivery of the long-range missiles because he fears that they could drag Germany into the war.

There are signs that the Union proposal could also be supported by individual members of the FDP and Greens. The chairwoman of the Defense Committee, Marie-Agnes Strack-Zimmermann, had already approved a similar Union proposal two weeks ago. The FDP politician has already announced that she wants to do the same this time.
