NATO expressed readiness to work to build confidence with the Russian Federation

The North Atlantic Alliance (NATO) stands ready to work towards building confidence with Russia if Moscow takes concrete steps to reduce tensions in bilateral relations. This became known on Thursday, December 16.

“If Russia takes concrete steps to reduce tensions, we are ready to work on strengthening confidence-building measures,” the alliance’s website said in a statement.

NATO is also aware of Russia’s proposals on security in Europe, but at the same time, the organization indicated that the dialogue should be conducted on the basis of reciprocity.

“We are aware of the proposals that Russia recently presented on European security. It is obvious that any dialogue with Russia should be based on reciprocity, taking into account NATO’s concerns regarding a number of Russia’s actions, ”the document says.

According to the organization, the Russia-NATO dialogue “should take place in consultation with the European partners of the alliance.”

On December 16, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said that in its proposals on security guarantees, Russia outlined NATO specific ideas aimed at preventing further escalation of the situation. Zakharova noted that the Russian Federation expects from the United States a response to the proposals and constructive work on the draft documents.

On December 15, Yevgeny Schmidt, a member of the Bundestag International Affairs Committee, in an interview with Izvestia, pointed out that the North Atlantic Alliance must stop pursuing an unfriendly policy towards Russia and move on to de-escalation.
