The number of first-year students is increasing for the second time in a row. However, according to the Federal Statistical Office, the pre-Corona level has not yet been reached.
The number of new students rose slightly again last year. According to the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), 481,500 people enrolled in Wiesbaden to study at a German university for the first time in the 2023 academic year (summer semester 2023 and winter semester 2023/2024). That was 7,800 or 1.6 percent more than in the 2022 academic year, Destatis announced on Wednesday. “This means that the number of first-year students has increased for the second time in a row, but is still below the number for 2019, the year before the corona pandemic (508,700).”
The increased number of foreign students alone caused the increase in 2022 compared to 2021. According to Destatis, more German students are now enrolling at a university in Germany for the first time. At 305,900, their number was 1.9 percent higher than in the previous year, but also still well below the pre-Corona level (383,300). On the other hand, at 130,500, more foreign first-year students were enrolled than before Corona (125,400).
In particular, the subject groups of human medicine/health sciences, humanities and engineering recorded a large increase in first-semester students. According to Destatis, there was a decline in the subject group of art and art studies. A total of 2,869,500 students were enrolled at German universities in the winter semester of 2023/2024, 1.7 percent fewer than in the winter semester of the previous year (2,920,300).
