There is no end in sight to the serious crisis in Haiti, which has been rocked by gang violence. An airlift should now guarantee supplies for the population.
The United Nations is setting up an airlift to supply the suffering population of the Caribbean crisis state of Haiti from the neighboring Dominican Republic. This is intended to ensure the seamless supply of humanitarian goods and the entry and exit of UN personnel, as the UN mission in Haiti announced late on Wednesday evening (local time). Haiti – the poorest country on the American continent – and the Dominican Republic, which is popular with holidaymakers, share the Caribbean island of Hispaniola.
The United Nations had previously announced that it was withdrawing its non-essential personnel from Haiti amid escalating gang violence. Due to the volatile security situation and based on the results of a revised security review, non-essential personnel will be reduced, a UN spokesman said on Wednesday.
However, he stressed that the United Nations was not leaving Haiti. Employees who carried out life-saving work remained in the country.
There is a government crisis in Haiti following the resignation of interim Prime Minister Ariel Henry. Henry took over the reins of government shortly after the assassination of President Jovenel Moïse in July 2021. Brutal armed gangs, which together control almost the entire area of the capital Port-au-Prince, banded together in late February and called for Henry’s resignation. The head of government then did not return from a trip abroad. The German ambassador and other diplomats have now left Haiti.
