The Czech Republic’s parliament finds clear words for Russia and describes the government as a “terrorist regime”. Ukraine benefits from this view.
The parliament in the Czech Republic has declared Russia to be the greatest security threat to the EU and NATO member state. An adopted resolution said that the – literally – “terrorist regime in Russia” was trying to expand its sphere of influence to Ukraine and other European countries. This goes hand in hand with the commission of war crimes. It is therefore of crucial interest to continue to help Ukraine in its defense against Russian aggression.
“A cessation of the delivery of military material would, however, lead to the conquest and devastation of Ukraine by the Russian terrorist regime,” it said. In the past, the Czech Republic has handed over battle tanks, attack helicopters and multiple rocket launchers to Kiev, among other things.
84 MPs from Prime Minister Petr Fiala’s liberal-conservative coalition voted for the resolution. There were 17 votes against and 42 abstentions.
Most recently, Prague launched an initiative to procure around 800,000 artillery shells for Ukraine from countries outside the EU. Germany, France and Canada, among others, want to contribute financially. Recently there have been increasing reports of ammunition shortages on the Ukrainian side. In addition, Kiev is having increasing problems recruiting new soldiers for front-line operations.
