A total of 13 boats are said to have arrived on the Mediterranean island within a very short time. A boat is shipwrecked – with consequences.
More than 600 boat refugees from Africa arrived on the Italian Mediterranean island of Lampedusa overnight. The authorities reported a total of 13 boats that were registered within a few hours. Shortly before reaching the island, a boat with a total of 45 migrants on board was shipwrecked, it said. Almost all of the occupants were able to save themselves, but a 15-month-old toddler was missing.
In total, the authorities counted 620 new arrivals. According to them, the migrants, who come from different countries, had all made the dangerous crossing to Europe from Tunisia. The people on board the sunken boat paid 1,000 euros per person to be taken to Italy.
Deadly disasters occur again and again in the Mediterranean during the crossing. The small island of Lampedusa between Sicily and Tunisia has been a hotspot for illegal migration for years.
