Ukraine has qualified for the European Football Championship. Federal Interior Minister Nancy Faeser sees the security authorities prepared to protect the team and fans.
According to Federal Interior Minister Nancy Faeser (SPD), the German security authorities are well prepared for Ukraine’s participation in the European Football Championship. The security measures are high and closely coordinated between the federal government, the states and the participating nations, Faeser told the German Press Agency. “We will do everything we can to protect the Ukrainian team and the fans. We are continuing to prepare with concentration. Our focus ranges from protection against hooligans and Islamists to the security of our networks against cyber attacks.”
Faeser congratulated the Ukrainian team, who won their crucial qualifying match against Iceland 2-1 on Tuesday evening. Ukraine’s participation in the European Championship sends a message that extends far beyond sport. “Ukraine belongs to Europe. We stand firmly on Ukraine’s side. We are protecting 1.1 million people in Germany who have fled from Putin’s murderous war of aggression. Like many Ukrainians, they will be rooting for their national team,” she said .
Faeser had previously announced border controls during the European Championships in the summer. “We will carry out temporary border controls at all German borders during the tournament in order to be able to prevent possible violent criminals from entering the country,” she told the “Rheinische Post” (Tuesday). This is necessary in order to protect the major international event in the best possible way. The European Football Championship in Germany starts on June 14th.
