The number of new nursing trainees last year was slightly higher than the previous year. Almost three quarters of the contracts were concluded by women.
Last year, around 1,800 more people signed a nursing training contract than in 2022. According to – albeit preliminary – figures, this is an increase of three percent, reported the Federal Statistical Office.
While 52,100 new training contracts in nursing were concluded in 2022, there were around 53,900 in 2023. A total of 147,000 people were in training to become a nursing specialist last year. According to the information, the proportion of trainees who were women was 75 percent. Last year’s new trainees included 15,100 men and 38,900 women (72 percent).
Training to become a nursing specialist has been offered since 2020. At that time, the previously separate training courses in the professions of health and nursing staff, health and pediatric nurses and geriatric nurses were brought together. According to the Federal Statistical Office, final results for nursing trainees are expected to be available in the summer.
The need for nursing staff will increase significantly in the coming years: at the end of March, the Federal Statistical Office calculated in a calculation that the number of people in need of care in Germany would rise from around 5.0 million to around 6.8 at the end of 2021 due to increasing aging alone million in 2055 (plus 37 percent).
