Demonstrations: Easter marches: Left warns against being taken over by the right

Easter under the sign of peace: Thousands are expected at traditional marches – with clear demands on politicians.

This weekend people want to demonstrate for peace again in dozens of cities in Germany. The traditional Easter marches are taking place this year under the motto “Now more than ever – together for peace”.

At many Easter marches there will be loud calls for an end to hostilities and peace negotiations in Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine, which violates international law, and in the Gaza War, according to the organizers’ website. In addition to these two highlighted wars, we do not want to forget the many other conflicts and wars around the world, it goes on to say.

A move away from the logic of war and militarization is called for

The traditional demands for disarmament and the abolition of nuclear weapons are to be intensified this year by a demand for a fundamental move away from the logic of war and militarization.

The kick-off is scheduled to take place on Maundy Thursday in Erfurt and Freiburg, among others. The biggest events follow on Holy Saturday and Easter Monday. According to the organizers, over 100 events should take place.

The leaders of the Left in the Bundestag and the party have called for participation: “The current war rhetoric is frightening. In the EU these days people are talking quite blatantly about the war economy,” said a joint press release. “That’s why: Germany and the EU don’t have to become more capable of war, but rather more capable of peace!” At the same time, they warned against the infiltration of individual Easter marches by right-wing groups: “There is no peace policy from the right.”
