Bulgaria is facing another election. This could be held in the Balkan country at the same time as the European elections on June 9th. Provided an interim cabinet comes into being in time.
After three failed attempts to form a government, there will be another early parliamentary election in Bulgaria.
President Rumen Radev instructed the head of the Court of Audit, Dimitar Glavchev, to set up a transitional government to organize the new elections. The president gave the 60-year-old economist seven days. What is now the sixth parliamentary election in Bulgaria since April 2021 could coincide with the EU election on June 9th if the deadline is met.
In view of the political tensions in Bulgaria, Glavchev reportedly wants to form an interim cabinet made up of “politically independent experts” from the ministries. Before being hired as head of the Court of Auditors, Glawchev was a politician from the center-right Gerb party and speaker of parliament in 2017.
The new election became necessary because all three possible attempts to form a government failed. The two pro-Western parties Gerb-SDS and PP-DB were unable to agree on the continuation of the coalition they formed in June 2023 due to disputes over personnel and reforms.
