In the Middle East, the already tense situation is coming to a head – once again. After an attack on an Iranian embassy building in Damascus, Syria, the government in Tehran is threatening retaliation. “Israel will be punished,” wrote Iran’s spiritual leader Ali Khamenei.
Is Israel behind the attack on the embassy?
The airstrikes on the consular building of the Iranian embassy in Syria’s capital killed 13 people, including seven members of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard. They also included two high-ranking representatives of the al-Kuds Brigades. It is still unclear who is behind the attack, but many things point to Israel. Syria and Russia also blamed the country.
Since the start of the war in Syria in 2011, Israeli forces have carried out numerous airstrikes in Syria, targeting Iranian-backed groups such as the Hezbollah militia as well as Syrian positions. Observers fear that the situation in the region will continue to escalate.
Who is behind Israel, who is fighting the country?
Hezbollah and Iran are considered the axis of resistance against Israel. The Emir of Qatar gives millions to those in need in Gaza – and to Hamas. Iran and Saudi Arabia have been sworn enemies for decades, but have recently moved cautiously closer.
In the photo series you can see who is on Israel’s side in the region and beyond, who is fighting the state, who is getting closer to whom and who is pursuing which interests.
