Omikron variant: Habeck expects additional corona measures in January

Further measures against the rapid spread of the Omikron variant are expected before the federal and state government consults. However, Vice Chancellor Habeck rules out a complete lockdown.

Because of the Omikron variant, Vice Chancellor Robert Habeck (Greens) expects an expansion of the corona restrictions after the turn of the year.

“I am sure that clubs and discos will close, that we will also reduce contacts for vaccinated people indoors,” he said on Monday morning on Deutschlandfunk. Habeck assumes, in his own words, that this will be the subject of the federal-state consultations announced for Tuesday “and that it will then also be agreed for January”.

Habeck does not consider a complete lockdown, as his party colleague Janosch Dahmen brought up for discussion, to be necessary. The Federal Minister of Economics warned that proposals to completely paralyze private and public life should not be dealt with “lightly”. “If we are smart, then we take differentiated measures.” The Green health politician Dahmen had previously told the German Press Agency: “In view of the extremely high transferability of Omikron, we will probably not be able to avoid a lockdown after Christmas.”
