Forecast for Omicron wave in Germany
The recently identified Omikron variant brings a new dimension to the pandemic. Omikron is characterized by a greatly increased transferability and undermining existing immune protection. “The explosive spread in other European countries shows what could happen to Germany, warns the Expert Council in adults there is a very high disease burden to be expected from Omikron. “
Which corona situation threatens Germany
The panel continued that the dramatic spread of the variant could have serious consequences in Germany. “Rapidly rising incidences harbor high risks for the critical infrastructure (KRITIS) in Germany. These include hospitals, police, fire brigades, rescue services, telecommunications, electricity and water supply and the corresponding logistics.”
The state must be prepared for this comprehensively and immediately, demand the experts – from the federal government, through the state level to cities and municipalities. The armed forces, technical relief organization and aid organizations and other “possible partners” should also be involved.

Possible measures against the Omikron variant
“According to the mathematical models, an overload of the health system and the restriction of the critical infrastructure can only be contained together with strong contact reductions,” writes the committee in its paper. “Effective nationwide coordinated countermeasures to control the infection process must be prepared, in particular well-planned and well-communicated contact restrictions.”
The Expert Council also advises that all vaccination campaigns be continued and accelerated “with all available means” over the holidays. Avoiding larger gatherings and wearing FFP2 masks, especially indoors, are also among the measures recommended by the Expert Council.
