Monk, rocker, encourager: The well-known Benedictine monk Notker Wolf has died at the age of 83.
The Benedictine monk Notker Wolf is dead. According to his St. Ottilien Abbey, he died on the return journey from Italy. His publisher Herder also announced that Wolf had died at the age of 83.
“Notker Wolf was one of the defining faces of Christianity in Germany for decades. We will miss his energy, his humor and his unconventionality. Especially in times like these, he was a symbol for all of us of how much strength and courage faith can give “said Herder managing director Simon Biallowons.
Wolf had often been discussed when a bishopric in Bavaria was vacant, but in addition to his theological work, he had also become known as a rock musician. As a monk with the electric guitar, as “the rocking abbot”, he stood on stage with his band.
The requiem and funeral will take place on Saturday, April 6th at 10:30 a.m. in St. Ottilien, the monastery announced.
