The Bundestag member Bijan Djir-Sarai is to become the new FDP general secretary. Party leader Christian Lindner has proposed the foreign expert as the successor to Volker Wissing.
The FDP member of the Bundestag Bijan Djir-Sarai, 45, is to be the new general secretary of his party. Party leader Christian Lindner proposed him provisionally for the office on Monday, according to the party’s federal executive committee. According to the statutes, the federal chairman has the sole right to propose, but a party congress decides later. Djir-Sarai is to be the successor to Volker Wissing, who is digital and transport minister in the new federal government.
Bijan Djir-Sarai, the man for “prudent foreign policy”
Djir-Sarai is known as his party’s foreign policy maker and has spoken widely on human rights issues. “Born in Tehran, I graduated from high school in Grevenbroich and studied business administration in Cologne,” he writes on his website. Until the 2017 federal election, he worked as a full-time department head for information technology, infrastructure, technology, controlling and organization in the Rhine district of Neuss.
He joined the FDP in 1996 and was elected to the Bundestag for the first time in 2009. Djir-Sarai describes his main focus of work in the Bundestag as “prudent foreign policy, genuine common European security policy, digitization of state structures”.
The new General Secretary will play an important role in profiling the content of the FDP. Party leader Lindner had already announced that after his move to the head of the Federal Ministry of Finance he would rather hold back from party political profiling actions – he now sees this task with the Bundestag parliamentary group and party representatives outside the federal government.
