A photo from a garden party in May 2020 puts UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson in a mess. At that time, there were strict contact restrictions in the country. The people feel betrayed.
A photo causes an uproar in Great Britain: It was published by the “Guardian”, it shows Prime Minister Boris Johnson with almost 20 people in the garden of his government seat on Downing Street. The recording is said to be from May 15 – at that time there were strict contact restrictions in Great Britain due to the corona pandemic.
The prime minister, as well as some of his confidants and associates, has apparently not complied with it. Johnson can be seen at a table with his wife Carrie and two employees. Spread across the garden you can see other groups, there is wine and cheese. A government spokesman said it was a working meeting. Nonetheless, the publication has sparked a storm of indignation in Britain.
Trouble with Boris Johnson and the political elite
Many people get the impression that the rules apply to the entire population – only the political elite, which apparently did not make them up. Many Brits let their frustration and disappointment run free on Twitter. Some compare their experiences from the time of the first corona wave with the behavior of the premier.
“My family could not visit a dying relative or celebrate a funeral because we were in lockdown. My daughter did not have a party for her 13th birthday because we were in lockdown. Meanwhile: Boris Johnson,” commented journalist Otto English on the picture . “Millions of us have done our best and obeyed the rules. Boris Johnson obviously didn’t think they applied to him.”

Nursing staff feels betrayed
The nursing staff, who are under a particularly heavy burden in the pandemic, are particularly disappointed. An example is the report of a nurse: “Back then, as a nurse in training, I was asked to work in a corona intensive care unit. I saw people die who were younger than me. I saw the father of a friend die.” All in all, she has seen more deaths than most nurses in ten years, she writes – and asks: “How was the party, Boris Johnson?”
Another user reports on a first date he had in a park in May 2020 with a distance of two meters. Because of the corona restrictions, he could hardly see the other person in the following months: “One of many relationships that did not survive in 2020.” Meanwhile, Boris Johnson had garden parties on Downing Street and his health secretary, John Hancock, had an affair with an employee, he notes bitterly. Images of Hancock’s infidelity had also surfaced and the politician had to resign.
Johnson violates contact restrictions
In May 2020, only a maximum of two people were allowed to meet in England, outside and at a distance of two meters. Working meetings should also only take place “if absolutely necessary”. On May 15, the day the picture was taken, 10,700 patients were treated with Covid-19 in hospitals in the UK. 384 Covid-19 deaths were reported that day.
The photo joins a series of reports of parties that are said to have taken place on Downing Street during the lockdown. Johnson therefore lacks the political authority to defend stricter corona measures. Labor Vice-Leader Angela Rayner called the picture “a slap in the face of the British public”. Many citizens apparently see it similarly.
