Shocking results: Thousands of children have been killed and injured since the Gaza war began six months ago. The chances of survival in the region are dwindling day by day.
After six months of the Gaza war, aid organizations draw a devastating conclusion. More than 13,800 children have died in the Gaza Strip and over 12,000 others have been injured, according to the United Nations and the health authority in Gaza, which is controlled by the Islamist Hamas.
“Even if the numbers are difficult to verify: every child who is killed, maimed or injured in this war is one child too many,” said the managing director of Save the Children Germany, Florian Westphal. The Gaza war has been going on for over 180 days, and people’s chances of survival are decreasing day by day, as Westphal said.
Asked if it was a war against children, Tanya Haj-Hassan from Doctors Without Borders said it was a war against civilians. “I doubt that children in particular are the main target of this war. It is more the fact that 50 percent of the population are children. Children are vulnerable. Children will lose their lives, their health, their limbs, their education,” Haj said -Hassan.
Medical care in the region is critical, said Amber Alayyan, deputy Middle East program manager for Doctors Without Borders Paris. “We’re now seeing gunshot wounds in children that come from quadcopters – which are basically drones with weapons. We’re seeing an alarming number of infectious diseases or outbreaks of hepatitis.” Rising cases of malnutrition are also alarming.
But the mental health and resilience of these children is remarkable, said Karyn Beattie, director of operations for Save the Children International in the Gaza Strip.
