According to a report, the pot of special funds for the troops is said to have already been emptied to 99.99 percent. The federal government is discussing whether or how additional sums will be available.
According to a media report, the special funds set up by the federal government for the Bundeswehr after the Russian attack on Ukraine have been practically used up. Of the 100 billion euros contained therein, 99.99 billion euros have been planned, reported the “Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung” (“FAZ”) in its Wednesday edition.
Against this background, Green Party leader Katharina Dröge once again pushed for a reform of the debt brake. Investments in European security and freedom are extremely important in these times, she told the “FAZ”. “The best solution is therefore to modernize the debt brake, which enables appropriate investments instead of slowing them down.”
Another special fund collides with the debt brake
Federal Defense Minister Boris Pistorius (SPD) had previously suggested that necessary additional spending for the Bundeswehr be excluded from the debt brake. Shifts in the budget alone would not be enough “given the amounts we are talking about,” Pistorius said on ZDF on Monday evening. “If in doubt, we will also have to talk about additional debt – in this coalition or in the next,” he added.
The FDP, on the other hand, continues to insist on strictly adhering to the debt brake and in return has brought up cuts in the social sector. FDP parliamentary group leader Christian Dürr told the Bayern media group with regard to Pistorius’s move: “No, that’s not a viable option.” Instead, one must “use the available money wisely” and “set priorities in the budget”.
