German Israel discourse: We don’t speak openly to each other. What’s that supposed to mean?

The war in Gaza has degenerated into a campaign of revenge that threatens to destroy Israel’s security and that of the Palestinians. The debate about this war doesn’t make that any easier. Nevertheless, we should finally lead it openly instead of ducking away.

Are we in Germany making it too easy for ourselves to condemn Israel for the horrendous number of civilians killed and for the unimaginably great destruction that it has caused in the Gaza Strip in the course of its campaign against Hamas? My colleague Nico Fried warns about exactly this in a stern essay this week. His piece ends with the recommendation: “Precisely because there are currently so many arguments against the Israeli war, we should also take the arguments for it seriously. We owe it to Israel.”
