He has been at the head of the Thuringian SPD for four years – now Georg Maier is supposed to keep the Social Democrats in government in the state elections in September.
Thuringia’s Interior Minister Georg Maier is supposed to lead the SPD into the state elections in September and keep it in government. The 56-year-old was elected the Social Democrats’ top candidate at a state delegates’ conference in Erfurt on Saturday with 84.8 percent of the votes cast.
Maier has been Interior Minister in the red-red-green state government since 2017 and has been state chairman of the SPD since 2020, which is currently polling at values between six and nine percent.
At the delegates’ meeting, Maier made it clear the Social Democrats’ claim to participate in the government after the state elections. According to the survey results so far, difficult majority conditions are expected. “We want to help ensure that Thuringia gets a democratic majority government,” he said. The Social Democrats are open to talks with all parties except the AfD.
The list of candidates for the state elections proposed by the party executive is controversial. Several candidates for the top five places on the list have been announced.
