In Moscow, extremely concerned about reports of the disconnection from the broadcasting of RT DE in Germany, the channel is experiencing unrelenting pressure, which is an attempt to eliminate a strong competitor in the media field. This was announced on December 22 by the Russian ambassador to Germany, Sergei Nechaev.
“We are extremely concerned about reports that the broadcast of the satellite signal of the Russian German-language TV channel RT DE […] was terminated at the request of the German media regulator. We state with regret that RT DE is under constant pressure in Germany to prevent or make it as difficult as possible for a Russian company to start working on a local audience, ”he told reporters.
Nechaev stressed that attempts to “eliminate a strong competitor in the media field” and restrict access to an alternative point of view run counter to statements about the inadmissibility of censorship and protection of freedom of speech.
Earlier that day, it was reported that the German media regulator MABB forced the European satellite operator Eutelsat 9B to remove from its platform the German-language TV channel RT DE, broadcasting from a studio in Moscow.
On December 16, online video hosting YouTube blocked the account of the RT Deutsch TV channel.
Commenting on the actions against RT, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov noted that Moscow never wanted to go “on the path of stifling the press,” but does not rule out a response to the blocking of Russian media in the west. Lavrov stressed that discrimination against the mass media of the Russian Federation has been observed for many years, and the desire to respond mirrored has arisen more than once.
As the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry Maria Zakharova said in turn, Berlin by such actions led Moscow to the need to take retaliatory measures. The diplomat also pointed to censorship and the practice of clearing information space by Germany.
At the same time, the representative of the German government, Steffen Seibert, announced on October 4 that the German authorities were not involved in blocking the German-language RT channels on YouTube. There is no censorship in the FRG, he stressed.
