The television tower in the city of Kharkiv in eastern Ukraine is history. According to the AFP news agency, the structure was destroyed after a Russian attack. The employees were able to get to safety.
A television tower in the Ukrainian city of Kharkiv has apparently been damaged by an attack and collapsed. The local authorities had a Russian attack. An AFP journalist observed the building collapse. Kharkiv Governor Oleh Synegubow said in an online service that Russia had “established television infrastructure.” According to him, the employees got to safety during the alarm, so there were no casualties. There were “interruptions in the signal for digital television,” Synegubow explained.
Smoke over the Kharkiv TV tower
A video shared on social media shows the top of the TV tower falling to the ground as smoke billows around the area.
According to the architectural database “Structurae”, the structure was around 240 meters high and was built in 1981. The television tower is located in the middle of a forest, a good six kilometers from the center of Kharkiv. Before the war, 1.4 million people lived in the eastern Ukrainian city near the Russian border. It has been increasingly attacked by Russian troops in recent weeks. Attacks on energy facilities led to massive power outages at the end of March.
Television towers targeted by bombs and rockets
Television towers in Ukraine have been bombed or fired at several times since the Russian invasion more than two years ago. The aim is apparently to cut off the population from information from Ukrainian sources.
However, the towers are also part of the civil and military communications infrastructure. The tall buildings are often used to install electronic jammers.
