Should top candidates from the CDU and SPD enter into a TV duel with the AfD candidates before state elections? The supporters of one party in particular support this.
Two weeks ago, Mario Voigt, the CDU’s top candidate for the upcoming state elections in Thuringia, and the AfD chairman and top candidate Björn Höcke fought a 70-minute television duel. Half of Germans think this is good and are in favor of more such disputes. 42 percent of Germans are against such TV duels, eight percent expressed no opinion. At 57 percent, approval is slightly higher among East Germans than among West Germans (49 percent).
There are clear differences depending on party preference. The majority of supporters of the AfD (85 percent) and BSW (61 percent) are in favor of top politicians from the CDU and SPD in the other federal states also discussing with those from the AfD on television. Among supporters of the Union (48 percent), SPD (46 percent), Greens (35 percent) and FDP (49 percent), less than half are of the opinion that other politicians should follow Mario Vogt’s example.
The data was collected by the market and opinion research institute Forsa for stern and RTL Deutschland on April 18 and 19, 2024. Database: 1004 respondents. Statistical margin of error: +/- 3 percentage points
