30 Years of Free Elections in South Africa: The History of Apartheid

After World War II, the white government in South Africa perfected the system of racial segregation, also known as apartheid. Soon there will be civil war in large parts of the country.

This piece comes from the stern archives and was first published on May 12, 2010. It has now been 30 years since the first free elections after apartheid took place in South Africa. On this occasion we are publishing the text again.

The bulldozers came at dawn. Protected by 2,000 police and soldiers, they moved in on February 9, 1955 to demolish house after house, hut after hut on the hills west of Johannesburg.
