The US State Department said Russia’s army had used the chemical chloropicrin against Ukrainian troops. And this is not an isolated case.
The USA has accused Russia of using chemical warfare agents in Ukraine. Russia used “the chemical weapon chloropicrin against Ukrainian armed forces” in violation of the Chemical Weapons Convention, the US State Department said on Wednesday (local time). Russia also used irritants as a means of warfare in Ukraine. This is also a violation of the Chemical Weapons Convention.
The use of such chemicals is not an isolated case. The Russian troops probably wanted to push Ukrainian forces out of fortified positions and make tactical advances on the battlefield, the US State Department said.
Sanctions package against Russia’s supporters
Russia has declared that it no longer has a military chemical arsenal. However, the country is under pressure to create more transparency about the alleged use of toxic weapons.
According to the US National Institutes of Health, chloropicrin is used as a warfare agent and as a pesticide. There is therefore a health risk when inhaling.
Meanwhile, Washington imposed a new package of sanctions against supporters of Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine. As the US Treasury Department announced, the punitive measures are aimed at around 300 people and companies. Affected are companies from Russia, China and other countries that are accused of helping Moscow procure weapons and military equipment for the war in Ukraine.
