In March the earth cracked open in Rome, creating a huge hole that even swallowed cars. The hole still gapes today, and residents fear for their safety. Why does this keep happening?
Ottavia Trecca is lying in her bed when the earth opens up about 50 meters away. The road surface collapses and takes two parked cars with it. Trecca and her family don’t notice anything, they sleep.
The next morning she sits at the small table in her kitchen and gives her nine-month-old baby a bottle. Next to her at the table, her partner is drinking his espresso. Then the message appears on the display of her smartphone: “Maxi sinkhole in Rome”.
Trecca says: “This is our street!”
