For Baerbock, her visit to Fiji is primarily about the fight against climate change – but occasionally it’s also about sport.
Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock’s delegation suffered a sporting defeat during their visit to Fiji. Team Germany lost 5-1 in a penalty shootout against a mixed U-15 national team made up of juniors from the small island state.
Baerbock’s penalty was saved. The only person who met for the foreign minister’s troops was the SPD member of the Bundestag Jürgen Coße.
During her visit to the Football Association of Fiji, the Green politician revealed that in her youth she played as a left defender and in the left midfield at TuSpo Jeinsen in Lower Saxony. “When I was a teenager, I had nothing to do with politics,” she said. She later wanted to become a sports reporter before an internship at the EU Parliament brought her into politics.
But Baerbock told the young athletes that they still benefit from their team experience in football. Organizing a team is central both in sport and in politics. “Sport is great preparation for later success in politics.”
Fiji’s young footballers are trained by German coach Timo Jankowski. The U15 junior national team has just been formed and brilliantly won its opening international match on Monday against Samoa, one of the neighboring island states: the final score was 13-0 for Fiji. In contrast, the Germany team did quite well.
