Angela Merkel was Chancellor for 16 years, after which she withdrew from politics and public debates. She will publish her memoirs in late autumn.
Former Chancellor Angela Merkel (CDU) will publish her political memoirs on November 26th. The memoirs entitled “Freedom. Memories 1954 – 2021”, written together with her long-time office manager Beate Baumann, will be published in over 30 countries worldwide, as the publisher Kiepenheuer & Witsch announced. The book should consist of around 700 pages. An audio book will also be published by Argon Verlag, which will be read by actress Corinna Harfouch.
A “Glimpse Inside Power”
“In a more personal way than ever before, she talks about her childhood, youth and her studies in the GDR and the dramatic year of 1989, in which the wall came down and her political life began,” says the announcement from the publisher Kiepenheuer & Witsch. Merkel lets readers take part in her meetings and conversations with the most powerful in the world. She describes how formative decisions were made. “Your book offers a unique insight into the inner workings of power – and is a decisive plea for freedom,” is how the publisher advertises the book.
“What is freedom for me? This question concerns me my whole life. Politically, of course, because freedom needs democratic conditions, without democracy there is no freedom, no rule of law, no respect for human rights. But the question also concerns me on another level . Freedom – for me that means finding out where my own limits are and pushing my own limits,” the publisher quotes the former Chancellor.
Seven decades of history in one book
Publisher Kerstin Gleba called Merkel one of the “most important leaders of our time.” She brings seven decades of eventful history to life in her memoirs. “Your memories open our eyes to the possibilities, the challenges, but above all to the strengths of our democracy.”
Merkel, now 69 years old, did not run for the 2021 federal election after 16 years as chancellor. Born in Hamburg, she grew up in the GDR, studied physics and was politically active since the time of political upheaval in the East. In 1990 she was elected to the Bundestag. She was Minister for Women and later Minister for the Environment. From 2000 to 2018 she led the CDU.
