Ukraine war: USA provides two billion US dollars in military aid

Lack of weapons, ammunition and soldiers: Ukraine has been on the defensive for months – and is coming under further pressure in the Kharkiv region. US Secretary of State Blinken is now promising further help in Kiev.

The US government is providing Ukraine with $2 billion for military purposes. US Secretary of State Antony Blinken announced this during his visit to Kiev. Blinken said part of the money would be used to finance arms deliveries to the country attacked by Russia.

Another part is earmarked for investments in the Ukrainian defense industry. Ultimately, the money should also help Ukraine procure military equipment from other countries.

“We are working to ensure Ukraine can prevail on the battlefield today,” Blinken said at a joint press conference with Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba. But it is also about putting Ukraine in a position to deter and repel future attacks and to secure the Ukrainian people’s right to decide for themselves about their future. The day before, Blinken had already met Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

The multi-day visit is Blinken’s fourth since the war began in February 2022. It was also the first visit after the USA passed a long-delayed aid package worth 61 billion US dollars (56.5 billion euros).

Ukraine on the defensive

Ukraine has been on the defensive for months due to a lack of weapons, ammunition and soldiers. Russia, which has been waging a war of aggression against its neighboring country for more than two years, launched a new offensive in the Kharkiv region in the border region last week. As a result, Russian troops occupied several Ukrainian villages near the border.

Recently, the Ukrainian army says it was forced to withdraw its soldiers from individual positions. In view of the difficult situation, President Volodymyr Zelenskyj canceled all trips abroad for the coming days.
