The conservative backbencher Natalie Elphicke is moving to the opposition seats in the British Parliament with media attention. And yet this small victory could end up being a strategic defeat for Labor.
It was a scene like an earthquake that occurred last week in the British House of Commons: Shortly before the question-and-answer session that the prime minister and opposition leaders hold every week, Tory MP Natalie Elphicke suddenly stood up from her seat and crossed the green carpet in full view of everyone, nodded briefly to opposition leader Keir Starmer and took a seat in the row behind him. Starmer enthusiastically greeted Elphicke and seconds later introduced her as “the new Labor MP for Dover”.
